A story on the dearth of good furniture in Ikeja Grammar School, Lagos, published bySaturday PUNCH last Saturday drew a wrong chord with the Lagos State Government.

Last Monday, it suspended the school principal for allowing this writer to gain access to the school premises and take photographs of classes where pupils sat on windows and concrete blocks while learning.

Even though it was reported in the story titled, “Lagos school where pupils learn sitting on windows, concrete blocks” that the principal was not around when this journalist visited the school, Saturday PUNCH learnt that her superiors have decided to hang the blame of the scandal on her.

After much speculation, 2face Idibia confirmed recently that he has signed prolific and veteran Nigerian musician Sir Victor Uwaifo to his new record label HyperTek Digital.

The announcement was made on November 30, 2013 at Club Rumours, Ikeja, Lagos. The details of the deal have not been disclosed but we know Uwaifo will be releasing new music under the label.
‘To belong to the artistes in HyperTek is my joy. I have the propensity to change. If you say it’s Jazz, I’ll play Jazz. If you say it’s Hip-Hop, I’ll play it‘, Uwaifo said at the unveiling.

A Mozambique Airlines plane en route to Angola crashed in a game park in northeast Namibia killing all 34 people on board, Namibian police said on Saturday.

Flight TM 470 left Maputo on Friday for the Angolan capital of Luanda with 28 passengers and six crew members on board when it lost contact with air traffic controllers, the national carrier said in a statement.

A 17-year-old girl, who has been accused by her sister-in-law of stealing N3,000 from her handbag, died in Kubwa, FCT, on November 26, 2013, Tuesday, after taking substances suspected to be poison. Abuja court sentences Lebanese to life imprisonment for terrorism

A Federal High Court in Abuja today sentenced Talal Ahmad Roda (pictured above), one of the three Lebanese men arrested in May 2013 in connection with illegal possessions of weapon, to life imprisonment. Mr Roda was arrested after a large cache of arms was found in a bunker during a raid on his residence. He was found guilty of all 5 counts of illegal possession of weapons and conspiracy.

The Nigerian New National ID Card Will Come With MasterCard Chip And PIN

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) representative described the advantages of the new national identity card. Apart from many other things, it may also be used as an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card anywhere in the world where there is MasterCard logo.

Briefing journalists today in Abuja, NIMC’s Director of Technical Services, Mr Emmanuel Ogungbe disclosed the Commission have already signed an agreement with MasterCard.
He explained that, besides being just an ID card, it is also a cash card, so the holder can withdraw money in any place. Moreover, especially within the West African sub-region, it soon would become possible to travel with this card only, passport-free.

Drama as Uduaghan Nominates Dead Man for Board Appointment

Members of the Delta State House of Assembly were on Tuesday thrown into a state of astonishment when they discovered that one of the seven persons nominated by Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan for appointment into the Delta State Tourism Board had died a while ago.

Last week, Mr. Uduaghan had included the name of James Youmu in a list of nominees for the state’s tourism board that was forwarded to the legislature for screening and confirmation.
Mr. Youmu has been dead for a while now.

Nairobi, Kenya: A man charged with murder has confessed to killing his lover but said he had reasons for doing so.
Mr Geoffrey Wanjala Wechule, 38, for a second time, told a packed courtroom that he killed Ms Jane Kadogo Mutiso on October 20, but added that the woman had “groped his private parts”.

Lady justice Florence Muchemi said the confession amounted to a denial and entered a plea of not guilty.
Mr Wechule was addressing the court after a murder charge was read out to him. He has been before two assessors who declared him mentally fit for trial.
He has been in custody pending the mental assessment the prosecution had requested.
